Sun Balm Ingredients

Organic Grass-fed Tallow

Tallow is high in the fat-soluble vitamins A,D,E,K. It is rich in the fatty acids that form the skin's lipid barrier which is used for protection and moisture retention. Tallow's composition is very similar to the sebum our skin makes, which allows it to readily absorb into the deeper layers of the skin where it can hydrate and nourish. Due to these properties, tallow has been used for centuries as the main ingredient in skin balms, moisturizers, and ointments.

Organic Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil serves as the perfect complimentary oil to tallow due to its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. Studies have shown jojoba oil to be an excellent emollient agent, meaning it increases the softness and suppleness of skin without leaving it feeling oily or greasy. Jojoba oil also shares a similar composition to skin sebum, which allows it to easily absorb and seamlessly integrate into the skin.

Non-nano Zinc Oxide

Zinc oxide is a form of zincite, a naturally-occurring crystallite mineral with a wide variety of functions in medicine. The use of zinc oxide is thought to be dated back to at least 500 BC, when it was utilized as a salve for eyes and open wounds, and later to treat ulcerating skin cancers. Zinc oxide has since been noted to protect against UV rays of the sun and thus has been used in many broad-spectrum mineral sunscreens. Non-nano zinc oxide is comprised of particles that are too large to pass through the layers of the skin, meaning it protects the skin by deflecting sun rays on the surface without absorbing. Sunscreens that utilize non-nano zinc oxide are considered safe for the environment and nontoxic for the oceans and reefs.

Organic Beeswax

Beeswax is the natural byproduct of the production of honey by worker bees. In therapeutics, it functions as an occlusive, humectant, and emollient meaning it creates a protective skin barrier and locks in hydration which softens and soothes the skin. Because of these healing properties, beeswax has been shown to alleviate dermatitis, psoriasis and bacterial overgrowth.

Organic Helichrysum (helichrysum orientale)

Helichrysum orientale is a flowering Mediterranean plant utilized for centuries for its healing and therapeutic properties. Known as “everlasting flowers”, these plants are rich in phenolic compounds which have been shown to aid in prevention of inflammation, cancer and cardiovascular disease. Traditionally, Helichrysum was used most frequently in treating skin inflammatory conditions, wound healing, and in treating pain and irritation. It has also been shown in published scientific studies to aid in skin hydration, calming inflammation, lightening hyperpigmentation, and protecting against UV radiation from the sun.
